Vitamin D was discovered by Elmer McColum in 1921.
Adolph Windaus later isolated three types of Vitamin D. Two of them,Vitimain D2 (erogocalciferol) and D3(cholecalciferol) are being used for nutritional supplementation. Vitamin D3 is produced naturally in the skin from exposure to sunlight and then is converted to a hormone. Without adequate levels of Vitamin D3 in the blood, the human body cannot absorb calcium and in turn cannot build strong bones.
Vitamin D3 is produced naturally by the skin only when UVB rays are strong enough to penetrate the epidermal layers of the skin. Oral Vitamin D3 requires larger quanities because most is destroyed in the digestive system.
Lying in the sun at the beach for hours trying to create the perfect tan no longer makes sense. Outdoor UVB rays in the US over 6 months of the year are too weak to stimulate vitamin D production. Even during the summer months when there is strong enough UVB rays adequate to produce vitamin D they are mostly available between 10am and 2pm. Also age is a big factor, a 70 year old only produces 25% of vitamin D as a 25year old does. And then there is melanin, melanin is what makes the skin tan when exposed to sunlight and is a natural sun filter blocking out UVB rays. Darker skin people block more UVB rays.
